Agriculture of today, evolved from humble begins to a highly sophisticated industry employing many highly trained and educated professionals. Our AgSafey Leader for this month, embodies this advancement in our industry.

Gursher Sandhu comes from a multi generational agriculture family from the Punjab region of India. His family began farming the family’s ancestral property, using simple but proven techniques developed over many generations.

Recognizing that agriculture is a science that is always developing and evolving, Gursher began his post-secondary studies in 2001, first completing his Bachelors Degree in Agricultural from Guru Nanak Dev University and a then Masters Degree in Entomology and Plant Pathology from Punjabi University. He is currently developing his knowledge of health and safety through the BCIT OHS Certificate program.

Newly arrived to Canada, Gursher Sandhu began working for All Seasons Mushrooms in 2009 as a grower and then eventually transitioning to the Quality Assurance Manager.

In his role as quality assurance manager and safety coordinator, Gursher is responsible for overseeing both the food safety and occupational health and safety programs. During Gursher’s tenure, All Seasons was able to achieve and maintain the HACCP, SQF and COR certifications. Gursher is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the All Seasons Mushrooms health and safety program for both BC and Alberta operations, including writing safe work procedures, coordinating safety training, dealing with WorkSafeBC compliance issues and maintaining the COR certification.

When asked what the benefit of achieving and maintaining the COR certification for All Seasons Mushrooms, Gursher is quoted as saying “The COR journey helps improve safety standards every year”.
