For over 20 years, Terri Scambler has worked in BC’s Greenhouse industry. She started her career at BC Hot House, where she worked her way up from an entry-level position. Terri first started work on the greenhouse packing line, learning how to sort and grade produce. From there, she was promoted to supervisor and then food safety and quality assurance.

For the last 10 years she has served as Randhawa Farms’ Quality Assurance Manager. Terri is responsible for ensuring that Randhawa Farms passes their food safety audits. Like many others in agriculture, Terri is someone that wears many hats, including management of the health and safety program. A family business, Randhawa Farms was first started by the family patriarch, Kan Randhawa. When his three sons, Ajay, Vijay, and Amit, were old enough, they joined their father in managing the family farm.

Safety is very important to the management of Randhawa Farms. A few years ago, a WorksafeBC Occupational Safety Officer had a candid discussion with the eldest son, Ajay Randhawa. The officer stressed the importance of safety, how it benefits both the workers’ wellbeing and the business. That is when Ajay decided that Randhawa Farms would become COR certified.

COR (the Certificate of Recognition) recognizes that an employers’ safety program meets the COR standard with a safety management system in place that aims to reduce or eliminate injury to workers. The Randhawa family knew the best person to take responsibility for success with this program was Terri Scambler. In November 2015, with the support and dedication of both management and workers alike, Randhawa Farms achieved COR certification.

Terri cites the main benefit of COR as “…there is a safety management system in place that helps ensure workers are injury free and get to go home to their families.” Terri has also observed increased worker morale, which has led to increased productivity.
