#AgSafety Leader – February 2016

“Creating an environment where employees give continuous feedback, and implementing their suggestions, makes them feel valued and appreciated.”

I am the Safety Co-ordinator for the Coldstream Ranch, where I have conducted two AgSafe internal large employer Certificate Of Recognition (COR) audits.

Being the Internal Auditor for the Coldstream Ranch has been challenging but not without its rewards. Creating a strong safety program requires hard work, dedication and a positive attitude within the organization and I have been fortunate to have continuous support from the management, supervisors and employees of the ranch.

The ranch has recognized the importance of investing in furthering my education in health and safety and has provided funding and support for my enrolment in the BCIT Occupation Health and Safety Program. This program has broadened my knowledge on health, safety and related issues.

The internal audit tool is an in-depth process that critiques the current health and safety program in place. I particularly enjoyed the interview process, during which I conducted one-to-one interviews with the employees. This process allowed me to understand the employees’ general attitudes towards health and safety and to receive both positive and negative feedback from them. Creating an environment where employees give continuous feedback, and implementing their suggestions, makes them feel valued and appreciated. Ultimately, their involvement results in employees taking responsibility for better health and safety conditions in the workplace.

Overall the audit process has helped the Coldstream Ranch uncover hazards and identify areas for improvement. With a strong safety culture, leadership, and continuous support from all the employees, I am proud to say I am part of a successful and safe company.
