New App Bridges the Gap in Occupational Health and Safety for Temporary Foreign Workers

Langley, BC / July 24 2025 – A new AgSafe initiative will provide invaluable health and safety support to British Columbia farmers and ranchers.

AgSafe continues to lead the way in providing multilingual training and orientation resources for B.C.'s agricultural employers and workers. While AgSafe offers a robust library of documents, training packages, and videos in multiple languages, the team recognized a unique challenge in orientating temporary foreign workers (TFWs) to Canadian workplace safety standards.

MOSAIC (M.O.S.A.I.C. Multi-lingual Orientation Service Association for Immigrant Communities) provides settlement services, advocacy, and outreach to migrant agricultural workers across the BC. MOSAIC’s deep-rooted relationships with workers and employers alike aim to foster safer, more inclusive workplaces with culturally informed, community-based support.

Many TFWs come from regions where occupational health and safety regulations are non-existent. In some places, workplace hazards are viewed as unavoidable, and safety measures may be neglected due to economic constraints or a lack of employer accountability or knowledge. These differences in safety culture create challenges for employers striving to provide effective orientation and training.

Recognizing the critical role of TFWs in Canada’s agricultural industry, AgSafe and MOSAIC sought to enhance existing safety education methods. The result is WorkWell, a mobile app designed to reinforce safety education in a continuous, engaging, and personalized way. Available in English, Punjabi, Spanish, and Vietnamese, WorkWell complements traditional health and safety programs by delivering bite-sized courses and interactive quizzes to ensure ongoing learning.

TFWs are essential to the success of Canadian agriculture. Ensuring they receive comprehensive   occupational health and safety (OHS) training is not only a legal obligation but also a moral and economic necessity. By offering clear, digestible, and personalized education, right from a worker’s mobile device WorkWell bridges the gap between varying safety cultures, By integrating WorkWell into existing training programs, employers can build safer workplaces and foster a culture of respect and accountability in the industry.

Quotes:

Many TFWs arrive from places where safety cultures—if they exist at all—differ drastically. We knew we needed a solution that was mobile-friendly, interactive, and accessible in shorter intervals.
Chad Stewart, AgSafe’s Superintendent of Field Operations and Temporary Foreign Worker Program Specialist:
TFW’s must be informed about workplace hazards and safety measures from their very first day on the job , not only because these standards may differ from those in their home countries, but also because they have the right to a work environment free from abuse and where the employer provides effective orientation to them – the WorkWell mobile app makes it easy for workers to access valuable knowledge anytime, for free and in their own language.
