Vanessa Key Craig | BSW, MSW, RSW
Based in Dawson Creek BC, Vanessa Key Craig BSW, MSW, RSW is a Registered Social Worker with the BC College of Social Workers.
Vanessa works to support children, youth, and adults who have experienced an event or series of events, and are struggling to process or make sense of what’s happened. Accessing clinical and supportive counselling in rural agricultural communities can be challenging. This can make it hard for farm and ranch families to receive support when they are struggling with stress, anxiety, mood, and loss. Counselling can be a powerful approach to tending to mental health, so that individuals and families can successfully navigate stressors and life events.
Sessions reflect a beginning, middle, and end, while drawing from an interwoven approach to support healing. Vanessa offers a therapeutic space to explore areas such as relationship, boundaries, coping, grounding, and emotional regulation. Areas of specialization include counselling for trauma and gender-based violence, using Somatic Experiencing (SE), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT). Couples counselling is provided using the Gottman Method for Couples. Vanessa’s practice reflects a comfortable and inclusive space for in-person and virtual appointments for children, youth, adults, and families to explore mental health, trauma, goals, stories, and healing. Sessions are trauma informed and trauma responsive, and aimed at tending to discomfort and working towards goals. If this resonates with you, please contact Vanessa.

As Farmers and Ranchers, we pride ourselves in our ability to be resilient. To go through tough times and not be beaten by them. Resiliency is built by experiencing and successfully enduring until the difficulties come to an end. All tough times - eventually - come to an end. But while we are enduring our resiliency is slowly wearing away. If we do not tend to ourselves with the care and attention we give our animals and crops we will be left with nothing. This is why mental health is so important. We need to give ourselves the time and space to recoup our resiliency so that we can continue supporting our communities and families for generations to come.
Agriculture is a community, we pull together to help those in need - but who helps us? You are not alone. Please reach out and see if counselling may be right for you, we can help process past events that are still lingering and help prevent future struggles. Please give me a call.

Are you finding yourself anxious, overwhelmed, hopeless, and struggling as you continue to work so hard and feel as though you’re getting further and further behind? You are not alone.
Agricultural struggles are struggles of the heart; it’s a piece of your soul, of your past, present and future. It’s your dreams, your hopes for what can be. It’s the smell of the air, the warmth of spring sun on your face, the feeling of that hay crop you worked tirelessly for against bare skin. It’s watching calves run around in the sun, and the miracle that is new life. It’s embedded into your being; it’s who you are. It’s generations of farming, a family history deeply interwoven. It’s a first-generation farmer, fighting tirelessly to keep a dream alive in a tumultuous time. No matter your story, the truth remains the same: you are tired. We were not meant to do this alone.
Shya is a Registered Social Worker (RSW# 15701) and Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC# 21507) at Haven Counselling Services in Prince George. She and her husband and two children live on a large acreage with cattle, pigs, pasture and hay land. Shya’s main role is to create a space of safety, trust and non-judgment for you to explore and understand your story in ways that allow you to see your own strength and resilience while also offering opportunities for alternative perspectives. Shya works from a compassionate Person-Centred and Trauma-Informed perspective, with a foundational belief in people’s capacity for change and recognition of the barriers of trauma, hurt and mistrust. Shya recognizes the importance of culture, spirituality and ways of knowing in comprehensive care, as well as the systems surrounding the individual.

Counselling methodology is Humanistic Existentialism
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)
Heidi Redl | MACP, BA, RCC
I am a trauma counsellor who helps people find joy and meaning in their lives after disaster has happened. I am particularly drawn to working with people who are living with chronic disease or disability, or who are in palliative care. In 2004 I was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis so I have first-hand knowledge of how suddenly one’s life can be changed by bad news or an accident. If you are overwhelmed by life circumstances and drowning in feelings of grief and loss, I understand you. I’ve been there. I’m still there. Let’s talk 🙂
I am also always available to talk to people who love and support disabled, ill people and people who are in palliative care. You make life worth living for the disabled and ill and it takes a tremendous toll on your mental, physical and emotional health.
My preferred counselling methodology is Humanistic Existentialism. In plain language, I like to help people find the answers to the big questions: Why did this happen to me? Now what? What is my purpose in life? How do I get unstuck and move past this situation?
I am also trained and experienced in providing CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy). CBT techniques have proven helpful in assisting agriculture clients to manage their anxiety.
My past history includes working as a cattle rancher (who spent a lot of time pondering the big questions on the back of a horse), raising children, volunteering with the MS Society of Canada, working as a fitness coach (yes, a disabled fitness coach) and authoring two books: A Quiet Roar: Living with Multiple Sclerosis and Raising Janis: an autistic child grows up. Doing research for the Raising Janis book gave me an interest in, and appreciation for, working with people on the autism spectrum and their caregivers.
Prior to tackling a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology I did an undergraduate degree in German and Russian languages and literature. I am fluent in German and welcome any excuse to keep my language skills sharp. If you want to converse with me in Russian it will be more difficult for me and will involve a lot of sign language and hand-waving on my part, but I’m game to try.
My husband Tom (my caregiver and phenomenal support person) and I have been married for 36 terrific and tumultuous years this year and we have three grown children. We are expecting our first grandchild in December. I am new to Kamloops and am loving living here. The people are wonderful and when it’s not forest-fire season, the weather is pretty good too.

I had the privilege of growing up in the North Thompson Valley on a family run multigenerational sheep ranch. I learned many values including hard work, respect for the land and that healthy relationships are paramount for health and joy. I learned about the challenges and hardships of funning a family farm including the necessary but difficult passing down the responsibilities to the next generation.
I had many challenges in childhood due to an undiagnosed learning disability and having Attention Deficient Disorder (ADD).
I struggled in school and wondered why it was so difficult. My self-worth suffered, no matter how much my parents reassured me that I simply learned differently than others.
Fortunately, later as an adult, I had the courage to go to college. It was there that I was diagnosed with ADD. The diagnosis helped me understand why so many things seemed more challenging for me than for others.
With determination, I made it through graduate school and received a Master’s degree in Social Work. I currently am registered with the BC College of Social Work and the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors.
I received a lot of feedback on my aptitude for counselling, which motivated me to keep going…and here I am today! I continue to pursue training and use the evidence-based approaches to best support the those I support in the counselling.

My counselling practice was formed between a career working for the Canadian Coast Guard and the influence of growing up in a family whose multi-generational experiences of addictions, mental illness, sexual and physical abuses cultivated a deep desire to meaningfully respond to emergencies of all types.
I started my counselling practice as I joined a family and multigenerational farm, 8 years ago, in Penticton BC. I have noticed a remarkable level of stress and uncertainty on agricultural families and workers' experience; seemingly without reprieve. My practice focuses on how we can help your brain and body shift out of overwhelming stress. My clients often come in experiencing physical pain, sleep disturbances, mood swings, difficulty feeling settled or relaxed, uneasy, along with relationship challenges. You can expect me to be available outside of the standard office hours of Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.

When we experience trauma or severe life stressors it is not uncommon to feel like our lives are unravelling. That unravelling can take many forms; emotional distress, breakdown of relationships with our partners and children, general dissatisfaction with life or work, feelings of overwhelming sadness, anxiety, anger and hopelessness. My passion lies in assisting clients in exploring the past, creating peace in the present and feeling hope for the future. My aim is to ensure that your therapy experience is a positive one that offers the potential to have you living life more fully.
I am a Master Practitioner in Clinical Counselling (Registered Professional Counsellor #3564) with over 20 years of counselling experience. I'm a senior practitioner in Mind Body Attunement Therapy which is an attachment and trauma focused therapy. This approach works toward restoring your capacity to regulate which allows you to access healthy coping strategies.
I have a background in agriculture, specifically cattle ranching, but am well versed in all sectors of agriculture. Clients describe me as straightforward and down to earth. My approach is one of discretion, compassion and non-judgment.

Working in agriculture is unlike any other industry — the stakes are higher, the margins are thinner, the seasons never pause, and the responsibility is constant. For many people in this sector, stress doesn’t come from one place — it comes from carrying the weight of the farm, the business, the family, the legacy, the weather, the labour shortages, and the unpredictability of everything you can’t control. It’s a unique kind of pressure that most people outside the industry don’t fully understand.
Before becoming a clinical counsellor, I spent years working in business leadership, agriculture-related operations, and industrial expansion. I’ve seen firsthand the toll that long hours, financial risk, succession challenges, generational expectations, isolation, and burnout can take — especially when you’re the one others rely on. That lived knowledge shapes the way I work with agricultural clients: with respect, practicality, and an understanding that mental health support has to fit the reality of the lifestyle, not the other way around.
In my counselling work, I support farmers, agri-business owners, seasonal labour managers, multi-generational family farms, and those in rural communities navigating stress, overwhelm, grief, identity strain, and the invisible load of always having to “push through.” You don’t need polished words or emotional language to start therapy — just a willingness to not carry everything alone.
If you are in the agricultural sector and are feeling stretched thin, worn down, or unsure how much longer you can keep operating at this pace, you don’t have to wait until breaking point to reach out. There is support available from someone who understands your world.

If you, your spouse or children as individuals or your couple or family as a whole are looking for someone to help facilitate change, I would be happy to help. I have been working in social services for 14 years and counselling or consulting for counsellors for approximately 8 years. I have training in and am working on certification and registration in nature-based therapy and horticultural therapy and also offer walk-and-talk sessions. I am certified in EMDR and the Safe and Sound Protocol, a listening therapy, both of which are more body-based therapies with less emphasis on talk, for those who prefer that. With kids, I use creative and play-based approaches to make counselling developmentally appropriate. My approach to counselling is to understand the client's needs and preferences and match the best fit of interventions that are effective, being adaptable and integrative. If outdoor sessions or movement can help facilitate therapy, I love to incorporate these. If an office setting is more comfortable, that is also an option in two locations within Nanaimo. I can also support people with virtual or phone counselling if that is what makes access possible for you. I am flexible.
My family were grain farmers in Saskatchewan and raise animals to this day. I have volunteered at a Community Supported Agriculture project and at a WWOOF homestead. I have seen the hard work, challenges and resilience in the people who work in agriculture. I also know that it is not necessarily easy to ask for help and that sometimes the great attributes of independence, strength and pride can interfere with us getting what we need. There are very real costs in not taking this step as well as enormous potential benefits to our wellbeing, our partners, families, businesses and communities when we have the tools, skills and support we need. Genetics, life experiences, physical health and stress all impact our mental health. Skilled professionals can help unburden and empower us to feel the best we can, improve our lives and situations.

Sadaf is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (#22302) who holds a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. Integral to her counselling approach is viewing the world and situations through the client’s perspective, as she has a deep understanding of the concept of biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors shaping people’s unique outlook on life.
Consequently, Sadaf tailors her work to each client’s individuality and does not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Sadaf primarily integrates humanistic modalities in her work, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and dialectic behavioural therapy (DBT). She works with adult clients (19+) of all ages. As a mother to a four-year-old boy, she also has a particular interest in perinatal/motherhood mental health concerns.

Recognizing the importance of family, hard work, commitment through hardship, and community is what sets farming life apart from other industries. Darrin is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), and would be happy to help you walk through any challenge you may be facing. Flood loss, bird flu, marital strains, family of origin dynamics, and/or faith struggles are only a few of the challenges you may be facing.

Parmvir Singh Boparai | RCC
As a counsellor who was born and raised in the lower mainland and exposed to work picking berries on our local farms, I have a small understanding the hard work that takes to work in the fields. Not only does that work create stress, it spills over into our personal life, family, relationships, and livelihood in general. Coming from a lineage of people who farmed in Punjab, I hope to establish a connection with clients to further understanding their struggles coming from agricultural work and otherwise.
My work is focused on helping you discover both the "why" and "how" about your struggles and your strengths. Through establishing a safe space, trust, and empathy, my philosophy is to form a therapeutic relationship between us to the benefit of your mental health. My approach involves tailoring counselling to what suits you and I am careful in recognizing that every individual has their own unique needs. Some styles of counselling I am fond of are CBT, DBT, and mindfulness, and spiritually-focused approaches.
As a counsellor, I have been privileged to work with individuals and families with a wide array of issues and concerns. The beauty of counselling is that you don’t need to be entirely sure of what is it that is causing you distress - we can discover that together. So let's connect so we can work together to achieve your goals and create change for the best!

Hola! Soy Trini.
