My AgSafeBC Story

It was my privilege to sit on the Board of Directors for AgSafe from 2007-2015. When the BC Cattlemen’s Association and BC Agriculture Council offered me the opportunity to sit as a director I had very little knowledge of the work that the Farm and Ranch Safety and Health Association (FARSHA) did. The staff and other directors were very informative and brought me up to speed.
I was amazed at the work that was being done at the time by the consultants, and still am. Not only do they provide ongoing safety courses and materials but they are constantly updated to ensure their relevance to industry.
Some of the key developments that AgSafe has brought forth for the industry during my time include; Confined Spaces training, ROPS program, COR program, and Emergency Management Guides.
My years with FARSHA have taught me many things. Over time I have had the opportunity to learn about other agricultural industries in our province. I was made aware of the various picking carts used and their differences from a safety prospective. All sectors have safety issues that arise in their different environments and usage and a one rule safety plan is not going to work.
For me a key development for AgSafe, brought to the forefront this past year with the floods and fires that occurred in our province, is the need for Emergency Management Plans. These plans will not only keep the farms stay safe but can also ensure the safety of emergency personal responding to the agricultural site.
I hope that in the coming years the focus of AgSafe remains on providing education and materials that guide the agricultural industries safely into the future.
